For your second essay, I want you to take something weve read (or will read) and find some moment/character/scene/reference that points to an actual historical event or socio-political context. This topic is pretty wide open, but I would imagine the paper would begin with a specific detail from the original story and then move on to a quote/brief description of the scene leading up to the contextual reference. You will then transition into your research on that contextual detail, complete with quotes and summary. You can end the whole thing with a brief paragraph or two of speculation on how the factual event supports and even echoes the themes and concerns of the fictional narrative. Obviously we will talk about this more in class.
The essay should have an original title, be about 1000-1500 words long, be in MLA format with a works cited
I have included three stories we read during class that I think would be the easiest to find a historical event or socio-political context you can reference. Feel free to choose from the three but “The Ones Who Walk Away From Omelas” might be the easiest out of the three since it references capitalism and the story is about how some must undergo pain and suffering for other to experience joy and happiness. Good luck and many thanks!
