Proposal statement: “The debatable topic I’d like to choose is gun control, more specifically if any mental health screenings should be included in the process for purchasing a gun. I’m extremely interested in the topic of gun control and finding evidence-based solutions that can be implemented into public policy. This issue is very polarizing and highly politicized which makes finding compromise incredibly challenging. As a human services major the intersectionality of gun violence being attributed to mental disorder is of particular interest to me. Historically people with mental illness have been scapegoated for many of society’s ills because people have a habit of looking for simple solutions to complex intersectional problems. Gun control itself is a large problem to tackle; however, I feel its intersectionality with mental illness is a narrow enough scope to make it an interesting debatable topic. “Using APA style, complete a Reference Page for the sources.
