Discus son Media Report Essay.Task: Critical review of recent media item concerning Indigenous people. Word limit: 2,000 words Description: Select a news item (i.e., print, web-based, or television) that has appeared in the media in the last six months and which concerns Australian Indigenous people. The news item should relate to a topic covered by this Unit of Study (either in lectures or workshops). Speak with your tutor if you are unsure of the suitability of the news item for the purpose of this essay. For the essay you are required to: Introduce the topic of the essay and the relevant news item on which it will focus. Outline the topic area (e.g., reconciliation, stolen generations, economic or political life, heritage conservation, working on Country, etc.) drawing on relevant key academic sources. Summarise the news item, clearly articulating its key point or argument. Analyse and critically evaluate the news item by discussing alternative viewpoints and perspectives to that presented in the news item. For example: Could the news item have been reported in a more positive way? Is it coming from a position of ignorance and is thus a lost opportunity? Does it celebrate resilience over disadvantage? Draw conclusions by stating whether you agree, disagree or partially agree with the approach taken by the news item’s author in presenting the material the way they have- and why! Hi all, I had a request to repost this Announcement. Here are a couple of links to Indigenous news/background sites to get you started on Assignment 3. Some of you may already know of these sites and there are many more out there. I’ve given you a mix of links that provide, news, community broadcasters, remote media networks and historical background to current issues. As well as the ABC Radio National “Awaye” program, I have also added a link to the RN Guide – you can search the guide for other Indigenous content that may be of interest. As mentioned in the first lecture some of this material may be challenging so, explore at your own pace and, follow the guidelines provided in the course syllabus under “challenging content”.
